John Mackay grew up in Toronto, Canada. He wrote his first song at age 3 and began playing piano at age 6. Playing guitar and bass throughout his teenage years, he became interested in jazz at 17. His professional career began at 18, playing organ in various bands. He played organ and piano in many different venues throughout the 70’s, including radio, television and studio work, as well as a great deal of live performing, including everything from solo piano to big band work. He Studied composition and arranging from several different teachers during that time.
Mackay has worked with many fine Toronto musicians, including Peter Appleyard, Don Thompson, Marty Morell, and Michael Stewart. He has also done some commercial gigs and touring with, amongst others, Roger Whittaker, Jim Carrey (just before he moved to Hollywood) and Dinah Christie.
He moved to New York in the early 80’s, gigging around town, and then settled in Boston for a number of years, working with many people, including Cab Calloway.He took something of a sabbatical from his professional career for a number of years to pursue spiritual interests, and during that time composed a good deal of sacred music, which he continues to do to this day.
Settling in Marin in 1994, John Makay continues to compose music for various venues and play gigs in the Bay area. He currently works with David Watson, Elaine Luchia, Fran Foston, Wanda Stafford, Vernelle Anders, and others, as well as leading his own trio and quartet. He has recorded a number of albums in the past years, everything from jazz trio and quartet, to sacred choral music. He also currently studies tabla and Indian vocal music at the Ali Akbar College in Marin.
