Frankye Kelly, born in Jackson Mississippi, was exposed to music through her grandmother at a very young age. Kelly’s love for music and the arts was very apparent to her parents. Kelly grew up an “Air Force Brat” where she traveled in and out of the United States. In her formative years, she performed in and won talent shows, pagents and state competitions. In Germany as a dancer of ballet, she would walk miles in the snow just to take classes. Kelly has a long list of mentors and influences that helped shape her talents and broaden her vision of music and the arts. Some of those you can hear in her singing are Sarah Vaughn, Emanuel Lasky, Johnnie Mae Matthews and Buddy Connor. One of her biggest influences is her being lead vocalist in her church choir at Second Baptist Church in Vallejo, Ca. With the warm sassy sound of Sarah Vaughn mixed with the soulfull spirit of the church, Kelly’s new CD “The Night Is Young” on the Music in the Vines label, shows her years of experience and great talent. Kelly has played in a number of festivals, clubs and special events. To name a few: Kimball’s East, Kimball’s West, The Top of the Mark in San Francisco, The Clairmont in Oakland, The Fifth Emendment in Oakland, the Vallejo Jazz Festival, Jazz on the Hill Festival sponsored by KCSM FM 91.1 radio, and a number of tours in Japan and Europe. Kelly performed background vocals for Marlena Shaw and recorded three singles under the production of Reggie and Rayford Griffin. Presently she is finishing her second CD on the Music in the Vines label, to be released in the early part of year 2000.
